So I am now the proud owner of a tablet PC laptop. A Techra M7 to be exact. And I may be no technical genius, but let me tell you this... I LOVE this laptop. I also love Alias sketchbook. Which is what this doodle was done in. Done while watching my boyfriend play Metal Gear... always a good time to doodle. ;)

Pictures from the North Country

For Thanksgiving (Canadian Thanksgiving which falls in October) I left the temperate rainforest city in which I live and went back home to see my family. Home, is about a 15 hour drive north of my current place of residence. I didn't drive, luckily, I flew. But none the less, here are some of the stunning scenes that I saw while I was there.

The second night I was back, I happened to be outside looking down the end of my street at just the right time. I probably gasped that the beauty of the sunset that was beginning to play across that wide open sky, signaling that night is about to fall. Of course, rather than standing there like fish with my mouth hanging open, I ran to grab my camera.

After all, I do so love sunsets.

The next day my family and I were going out hunting and so we were up way before any light besides that of stars was in the sky. After much driving and me and my sister trying in vain to stay awake and look for animals, we arrived at in the area to which we were headed. It was a cold morning. Just the perfect weather for animals like moose or elk to be wandering around in. So we got out of the nice warm truck and started walking. As we were walking though, we came upon this clearing just as the sun was coming up. I decided to stay there and take pictures of the sun coming up while the others wandered. I think I froze my hands off... but the pictures and just the memory of it, was so worth it.

Golden red sunrise gave way to a beautiful sunny fall day.

At noon we stopped and made a small campfire over which to toast some sausages and other treats. Fire has always been something that has facinated me, but for some reason or another, I've never photographed it. Well, now I have.

Check out that view... Panoramic views like this are the kind that stir my soul. The whole world seems so very large and unfathomable. Yet at the same time, it seems so close and tangible. It's hard to explain, but if you're there, you'll feel it.

I started this post out with pictures of sun sets and sun rises. I shall end it with a moon rise.

Crystal Moth

My apartment has a -I will admit - slightly cheesy chandelier in the dinning room area. One day, a moth flew in my window and was immediately attracted to the lights of it, as they were the only lights on in my apartment.

The following pictures are the best of the 20 some that I took of the Moth and the Chandelier.

Of course, sadly, after I took these beauftiful amazing pictures, I wanted to take more. Feeling though that I had tapped all the possible angles of the moth in it's current spot, I tried to make it move. Alas... the moth was dead. For move it did not. I then went to bed with strange thoughts on the beauty of death.

(Note: The moth wasn't actually dead, it must have just been stunned by the light and heat. As the next morning it was gone from it's post. It must have flown out the window again. Either that or I have a zombie moth in my apartment.)

So I don't usually post twice in one day, but I just finished colouring this. I am very open to suggestions and critic. It came out of Photoshop a fair bit darker than it appeared in the program, but I dont' think I'm displeased with it. Actually, I think I quite like it.

A bit of a cartoony portrait that I did of my two roommates over the summer. I don't believe I ever showed it to them, but I think it captures them. Of course, since they are likely never to see it, then they will never be able to say otherwise!

An Elf. I tend to draw alot of them. This one appears to be some sort of flying robot elf. Don't ask, really, half the time, I don't know where this stuff comes from.

More Moleskin sketches

So I was sitting in class one day, you know the kind of class, the kind where nothing that is coming out of the mouths of either the instructors or the students is of any relevence to yourself. I went to an art school, had a few of those courses. In this particutlar one, someone had this mug with a silouette of a palm tree and gradiated lines behind it. On one side it said "Hawaii". So I got this picture from that. *shrugs* I don't ask, I just draw.

A quick sketch of one of my classmates feet. It just struck me as quite adorable. She is quite an aggressive speaker, so above the table she was making her point very seriously and aggressively and yet underneath the table, her legs were posed in such a girlish shy pose... It struck me.

One of my few doodles from the summer.... Done in a train going out to visit some family for a weekend. Train rides are so great. I want to take a cross country train ride someday.

Blue Elf

Have I said how much I love blue pencils? I should write an ode to blue pencils... Oh blue pencil how I love thee....

So, aside from the blue pencil thing, there is something about this drawing that I really like. The shading perhaps, or the hair, or maybe it is the face structure. I'm not completely sure. But I do like it. I also love my moleskin sketchbook... next ode is to that.

Now, to bed... as soon as my friend in Australia who I haven't talked to in ages gives me a chance to!

For a while I was toying with the idea of turning my pirate antagonist in "Phantasie" into a female pirate simply to make is stop looking like Johnny Depp in PotC. This is one idea... I really like it. Too bad the pirate stayed male. I think there would have been lots of philosphical layers if the pirate was female... perhaps if it ever goes feature! AHAHAHAHA.

So it's been a while since I updated.

I blame the fact that I got a job on this. Yuppers, fresh out of school I am now working in the industry at a local animation studio as a production assistant. It's a busy job, but I love it. I'm getting more used to the hours and such now though, so hopefully I will also get back into drawing.

For now though, be satisfied with this.

Oh dear! A whole week without a post!
Must be careful not to let that happen again! So much for posting everyday....

Anywho, a couple more sketches from ye old school sketchbook. Almost through with all of these, then I have a few from my moleskin sketchbook... then... dang! Then I have to start scanning stuff again. That's always the tricky part... getting things from the sketchbook... to the scanner.

This started out with just this skinny guy, but the way I had placed him on the page made it look as if there should be someone else there with him.... and so then the hot little chick appeared. Tejas Raljack

A bit of a character sketch for Tejas, a long standing character from a novel that I am still working on. I love drawing her armour... especially the spikes on her shoulders. Those would be kinda nasty in battle, don't you think? One of my goals this summer is to nail down a look for her and do up a nice character sheet and such. So expect to see more of her!

Just one little image today... though I have to say I really like it. More slightly distorted. I love his hands too. I have no idea why he has elf ears. I guess he's an elf, though I can't remember why I decided to make him an elf. He looks confused, and a bit disheveled... I wonder why...

Other random news! I got me a record player! I love it to bits! *huggles record player* Now I can listen to my classical records and the Star Wars Soundtrack that I have on Vinyl. This makes me happy.

Sexy Pirate Ladies

Earlier in the year, as a form of fundraiser for our graduation external show, we had a space themed pub night. I doodled this before then because I was trying to figure out what I should go as.... I ended up going as some sorta crazy space pirate with this wild green sash and a silver eyepatch. But hey! I got to carry a sword AND a water pistol. I was stoked.

But I never did get to dress up and be all... SPACE GLAM!

The Black Unicorn

I'd posted the sketch of this a while back, and this is the coloured version. I'm quite pleased with out it came out, I played around a fair bit with colour. I'm particularly pleased with the shading on her skin. I feel like maybe I should do something more with the background, but I don't want it to be too busy.

Masks Ladies

I do exist! I haven't fallen off the face of the planet. Pretty close... but not quite! My film is done, you can see clips of it in my demo reel on my website www.estiae.com

But for now, I am going to in the next week try and post the plethora of sketchs that I did in the last month or so of school. I was drawing almost all the time, but I'm only just scanning some of them.

This is a bit of series that started rather innocently enough. I don't know what is really going on, or who these ladies are. Priestesses maybe? Each seems to represent something different. Take for it what you will.

Should hopefully be a summer full of creativity. I hope so anyways!

Happy New Year everyone! With a new year comes new projects... well.. not really, I'm still mostly working on my film. There will be more backgrounds and things going up for that soon. Very soon hopefully.

But in the meantime, enjoy these doodles! Evening classes always seem to produce alot of doodles....

I really like her design, she's how I started off. He just seemed like he should be there too... to balance out all the estrogen I draw.

Every once in a while I just get the biggest urge to draw some chick in her skivvies.... with strippy socks. All about the stippy socks.

A Saileki warrior. Very long story behind this race of creatures. They're from a novel (series?) that I'm... plodding away on inbetween everything else! Debating over giving them six wings or two wings....

When my ship comes in....

Okay, a break from the pirates... to give you Pirate ships! yah! For a while, I didn't have a full pirate ship in my film, just a little rowboat. but now, full pirate ship! BOOM! which means I have to draw it... so here it is! la!

This is, I believe, the close to final version of the ship. I like it very much. Yes I do. Is it logical or anything like a real ship? probably not. But I like it anyways!

A couple of other ship doodles while playing with stuff.

And another doodle of my fairy. She still needs some work before I make a puppet for her.....

BUT! On a good note, I have my voice actor (actress actually) for my little girl! yah!!!

Spinning spinning spinning

Here are a couple of rough character rotations for my film. Not the most exciting things, I know, but very very helpful for animating from all angles.

Erin, my main character. Isn't she just a sweetheart?

Taber is the pirate lackey who rows the boat... I think that's really all he does, but I don't draw him as much as I draw the Captain, so I drew him first.

And far more exciting than either of those, is more tree studies! in watercolour this time. They look much better in person... didn't scan that well. I haven't played around with watercolours in a while. I shall have to do some more of it tomorrow. Though I have only two brushes with me... as all my other ones are at the school!

Trees trees trees

For the last week I've been drawing trees. As my film is set in a forest, every single background I have, has trees in it. Truth be told, I'm not very good at drawing trees. So I took some time away from the planning of layouts to just sit and draw trees. I had a bunch of reference images, and tried to draw a variety of trees, some more stylized, some less... I guess. I don't know how well they turned out. But hey, they're trees! Tomorrow I'm planning on playing around with watercolours and trees, seeing as my backgrounds are possibly going to be in watercolour for the final version.

So yah, I'm starting to get very sick of trees.

Hopefully tomorrow I shall have a chance to scan some more doodles from my moleskin sketchbook, 'cause I have a bunch of stuff I like. I also will hopefully have some more rotation sheets for some of my characters and maybe even some pirate puppets! yah!

So many drawing ideas, and no time to draw them.

Girl on the Bus

I haven't coloured in Photoshop in a while. So I coloured this that way. A girl I saw on the bus. She was... amazingly strikingly beatiful. Pale blonde hair, fair skin, blue eyes, slim frame... very pretty. It struck me, so I drew her when I got back home. And ta da! Now here she is. I like the colouring on the shirt, especially.

Rainy days and monsters designs

Pictures are supposed to be worth a thousand words. Well, this has been my week so far....

That is largely due to the fact that I think I will have to cut the seamonster out of my film.... this makes me sad. Especially 'cause just last night I drew some of the coolest designs for him!

Ain't he awesome? I guess I'll have to use him somewhere else... maybe in another film. Now hopefully I can come up with some new and innovative and super cool designs for my pirates... who are still in the film of course... maybe I should trade pirates for seamonster...

A older sketch, from over the summer. I like her, she's got spunk. I love her socks.

More film work will be coming soon, especially since I think I need to revise my character designs a bit in some ways.... That's the problem with getting feedback from people who give good feedback, you can't leave things they way they were knowing they could be better. Good in the end, frustrating when you finally thought you had it right only to have to redo it.

Not that it's really cold here, but it's getting a bit nippy. And I do so love wearing my scarf. It's all bright and stripey!

Jumping, floating, feeling lighter than air... yah. Been there, done that.

I don't know what it is, but I love this sketch. Maybe it's the colours.

Erin and Opa character sheets

My work from yesterday. A few rough character sheets for the two main characters in my film. I'm not really sure if this is how professionals do character sheets, I just did what made sense to me. Done in col-erase, with ink. Arranged in Photoshop so they didn't look just like messy pages in my sketch book! Today's project is some colour tests for these characters, and similar character sheets for my two pirates and something for the sea monster too... Busy busy! But I'm loving every minute of it!

I hope you all enjoy these too. And expect more to come. I feel like things are really getting underway on my film. Which makes me very excited! *claps hands*

Moleskin sketchs

Moleskin notebooks are a beautiful thing. So small, and such nice paper! They take col-erase very nicely! It's been a while since I've sketched on white paper! My gorgeously beautiful fabriano artist's journal is full of so many colours! I love it though, it's fun!

Just some doodles from class, freetime, etc. All done in col-erase. Just playing around and having fun!

I quite like her, I don't know what it is. I was inspired by so many of the animator's blogs I've been watching and seeing all these different variations of head shapes and hairstyles that were much more simplified than what I normally do. So I gave it a shot. Turned out well!

Playing with perspective. I was getting tired of drawing male pirates, so here's a piratess! With a very awesome sword and a rather twisty pose. Go her.

It's that season! The rain is starting again. Right now I feel like this girl, that I like the rain. Give me another month or so and I will wish it would go away forever!

More to come over the weekend. Expect more detailed character designs for my film and maybe some life drawing.

It's super rough, the sound is really just thrown in so I have some. This is not by any means the final. It's close, really close. But not the final. I got a few more crits today that still have to be factored in. The sound is also low, so you might have to turn it up, and it's kinda big, so it might take a while to load. If you right click on the link and then choose "save as" you can save it directly to your computer and that might be easier. C&C welcome!

Pirates and little girls

Avast matey's! What be this? Argh, there be pirates in dis here post!

Some concept art for my film, working title "Phantasie" Man, I need a better title, but this works for now I suppose. The film is about a little girl, her grandfather and their adventures with pirates.

My pirate captain... only he'll look much different, 'cause here he looks far to nice and no where near evil enough. I still like the picture though. pencil, colours thrown on in Photoshop.

And my absolutely adorable little girl. Erin. She's such a sweetheart! Though I admit, I'm having some difficulties making her look like she's five, she always comes off looking older.

By the end of today I should have a rough leica reel done and shall post a link to that.

Done with Tria markers (Oh how I love those things! Though I wouldn't suggest using them in a non ventilated area.) and ink. Nothing fancy really.

I was hoping to have some scans of my storyboard to show, but seeing as I left it at school yesterday... I have none of that fun stuff! So you will just have to wait!

First Post - Kenni and Cat

Hello Hello! First post, just a bit of an introduction. I'm an animation student, but not for much longer! I graduate this year and then it's out into the real world for me. *thinks* Is there a real world in animation? or is that an oxymoron? Either way, you can expect to see lots of sketches and such from me. A fair chunk of it will be ones that come from the short film I'm working on... which doesn't actually have a title yet. Add that to my to do list!

You'll also see things that are completely random and have nothing to do with much of anything. New stuff and old stuff. I do hope you enjoy it and most certainly feel free to comment! I'd love to hear what people think of my work.

And for now I shall leave you with this little thing, two new characters for a story I'm working on. (I write alot too, had I not mentioned that?) This is Kenni and the demon red-wine swilling cat. Quick sketch with colerase, played around with burn and dodge tool in photoshop to enhance it a bit. Expect to see more of these two. They're unlikely housemates.
